Thirsty Thursday: Watermelon Grapefruit Mojito

I’ve been getting into the summer spirit on the blog this week with all things watermelon! On Tuesday I shared a delicious sugar cookie recipe, and yesterday I blogged about our watermelon porch makeover.

Get the recipe here, and see the porch makeover here.

Today I’m sharing a delicious recipe for a super summery cocktail: a watermelon grapefruit mojito. This cocktail was a happy accident because as I was juicing the watermelon, I realized it was not going to yield enough juice but I didn’t have time to go to the store. Luckily, I had some ruby red grapefruit juice in my fridge, and I thought the two would compliment each other nicely, so I went with it.

To prep for taking the cocktail to a party, here’s what I did…

Watermelon Porch Makeover

This Wednesday is full of watermelons, watermelons, and more watermelons. They just scream summer to me! Yesterday, I shared an easy (seriously!) sugar cookie recipe that I made and turned into watermelons.

Today, I’m talking all about a festive porch makeover I did. I plan to leave it up through the month of June, and then it’ll be time for a patriotic makeover. Meanwhile, I’m really enjoying this bright and fun porch to kick off summer.

House Divided Graduation Party

‘Tis the season for graduation parties! Today I’m sharing about a House Divided Graduation Party I designed for a friend of mine. At her work, she has two interns who are both graduating this year with master’s degrees, and she wanted to celebrate them! They go to two different schools, so she wanted to be sure to highlight that as part of the decorations. She also said she wanted a photo booth and a simple set-up.

The school colors for each graduate are red & gold and purple & gold. The fact that both schools have gold as a school color actually made my job easy! And, since purple and red compliment each other nicely, a color scheme was born. I added in some black as my basic color and I was ready to start designing.

Armed with my party challenge, I headed out to my favorite stores to gather supplies to bring her vision to life. I visited Michaels, Hobby Lobby, and Party City, with a final stop at my favorite spot – my garage ;).

Here’s what I gathered…

Friday Favorites: Julie Travels

Woohoo, we made it to Friday! This has been a busy week for me, as I returned this past Sunday from being gone a week for work and fun, so I’ve been playing catch up this week. My favorites today are all about my fun travels!

My first favorite is the time I got to spend in New York City. The conference I was at took place an hour north of NYC, so I was able to go into the city twice while I was there.

I blogged about what I did here.

One of my favorite things to do in NYC is check out new eateries, and I was able to try several new spots this trip so that’s definitely a favorite.

Check out those tasty details here.

Another favorite is the conference itself. I work for Girl Scouts, and I get to attend this conference annually at our Girl Scout Conference Center, Edith Macy, in Chappaqua, NY. The conference is called Girl Scouts Global Action, and is all about integrating a global perspective into Girl Scout programming. I always leave feeling energized and excited about the year ahead.

The pictures above are of the conference center, me with my awesome volunteer who came to the conference with me, and pictures from the Girl Scout pinning ceremony.

After leaving New York, I flew to Dallas to visit my family – definitely a favorite!! The weekend was spent playing outside, visiting a few of my favorite Dallas spots, and simply hanging out. It was perfect!

My final favorite this week was getting to spend Mother’s Day with my mom while in Dallas. We got to go to the church I grew up in and enjoyed a delicious brunch. It was a great day.

This morning I’m headed out the door to hop on a ferry and make my way to Girl Scout camp for a work event. I’ll see you back here next week.

Have a great weekend and party on!

Julie Travels: A day in NYC!

I’m back from my blogging break and a week in New York and it was a great trip! I was there for a work conference and I was also able to spend a little time in the city. I came to this same conference last year and on that trip I was able to spend a long weekend in the city with Chelsea. When I came home last year, I shared some sample itineraries for great days in NYC, and today I’m adding to that post by sharing another way to spend a day! (Read last year’s post here).

I was staying at the Girl Scout conference center in Chappaqua, NY, which is north of the city, so my day started with an hour train ride to Grand Central station. I caught a 7:00 train, so I was in the city by 8:00 and ready to start my day.  Continue reading
