I am so excited about this week’s blog projects! This weekend, I’m headed to Pullman, Washington, home of Washington State University to celebrate sisterhood with some of my favorite Kappa Delta sisters!
Every year, I get to work with two collegiate members to plan this special event, and I feel so lucky because they always ask me to help with decorations. Today, I’m sharing the wooden sorority letters I created for the banquet! We’re going with a garden party theme, so I wanted the letters to set the tone for the theme, and the women will use them at a photo booth.
I gathered all the supplies I needed – flowers, paint, paintbrushes, hot glue/gun, wire cutters, and wooden sorority letters.
First up, I painted the letters with a base of white paint. The letters needed two coats of white paint, and I let them dry overnight before moving to the next step.
Once the letters were dry, I used painters tape to make stripes on the letters. I just eyeballed it with the tape, but if I was going for a very exact look, I would’ve used a ruler and pencil to mark out my lines.
Once they were all taped up, I painting the letters with black paint. I painted two coats of black paint, then let the letters dry overnight again.
Next, it was time to pull up the painters tape to reveal the white stripes. I was careful to pull the tape up very slowly to avoid pulling the white paint up with the tape.
I was really pleased with how clean the lines ended up. There was hardly any bleed from the black paint, and I didn’t need to do any touch ups.
The letters were ready to add flowers to! I trimmed each stem to allow them to be adhered easily to the letter with hot glue, powered up my hot glue gun and got to work. As much as possible, I tried to mimic the pattern on each letter to make them feel like a cohesive set. I’ve had to re-glue a few of the flowers since finishing the set, but for the most part, they’re really secure.
I’m really pleased with how they tuned out, and they are the perfect compliment to the theme! Check back throughout the week for more sneak peeks at the brunch decor.
Party on!
